I have to be completely honest, that when I got asked to review the FuelBox Couples conversation starter box, I was little bit cynical about doing it as I thought to myself “my hubby and I speak to each other every day! Why would we need to ask each other questions. We know everything about each other…” but as I took a sneak peek inside the box to get an idea of what the questions would be like – I was definitely intrigued.
A chance to reconnect
As many couples do, we have fallen into the pattern of once the kids are asleep – sitting on the couch, turning on the TV or getting on our iPhone and sitting their quietly as we watch a show or scroll through our phones. Even though we are sitting next to each other, we are in completely different worlds at times with no real opportunity to connect. The night I decided to use the FuelBox questions, I poured a glass of wine for us, turned off the TV and switched off the phones, settled in on the couch and proceeded to take turns on asking each other questions. As a result, we laughed together, we looked at each other, we reacted in surprise at some of the responses and we reconnected when we answered questions about us and our relationship.
A chance to get to know each other
That sounded silly to me because as mentioned before, we know everything about each other. But I was really surprised at some of the questions and responses I got back from my husband. A lot of questions I never asked my husband out loud but I always assumed I knew the answer. Well wasn’t I wrong! I was so surprised to learn new information about him and his views and thoughts about various topics or what he wanted for us in the future. It really was an eye opening experience and I learnt that we are both always growing and what we said or thought when we first met, might not necessarily be the same years later. It was fabulous in tapping into new information and views about each other.
A chance to create intimacy
There is a whole topic on Sex that I think is great way to create intimacy in a setting that doesn’t feel forced. I mean, how many times do you sit down with your other half and say “ok let’s talk about sex”. Because we mixed up all the topics and had the cards facing down, a question about sex would pop up and even though it initially caught us off guard, it was a great way in getting us to talk about sex and questions like “what are your turn offs?” or “what is your favourite thing to do when it comes to foreplay?”. These are questions I don’t recall ever asking each other, and it was great to connect on that level and know that sex is still very important to the both of us (even when we have two kids and are both time poor and tired!).
A chance to laugh together
And laugh we did! We had some great questions that made us laugh like “What is the most annoying habit about me?” or “How would your friends describe me?” We giggled at each other’s responses and had such great banter back and forth that it brought a smile to both of us. We remembered what our lives were like pre-kids and how we would just enjoy each other’s company and laugh so much!
A chance to be grateful for each other
It’s amazing that this little box packed full of questions could unleash so much for us as a couple. It invigorated us as a couple and reminded us why we are so amazing together. Laughing and joking around is so good for the soul and initially we said we would just do one round of questions, but then found ourselves wanting to do another round of questions because we were really enjoying the experience together. And I have to say… it was a great segue for us going into the bedroom at the end of the night (ahem… if you know what I mean).
Honestly it was such a surprisingly fun experience for us as a couple and it will be something we will do on an ongoing basis as we didn’t get anywhere near going through all the questions in the box.
