How to create happiness out of the mundane for kids

2020 has been a year! I think the biggest impact we have all collectively felt around the world is having to be at home more than ever. This new reality has meant kids are home and us Mums are having to come up with new ways to keep them from getting bored. So how do we do that? I’ve begun turning the mundane tasks that they do on the daily into fun activities that they can look forward to – even brushing their teeth is made fun thanks to Grin Kids Oral Care.

Getting the kids to do their bed can be an ask! And getting them to do it properly is a stretch! At home we have a competition on who can do their bed the best. My 6 year old is very competitive and looks forward to finding out if she did her best the bed. My 3 year old likes to be included in everything we do so he also joins in. It’s as simple as everyone going to their bed and doing their bed and present it the best way possible. This includes fluffing up their pillow and arranging all their soft toys, so they look neat and tidy. We often get Dad when he comes home from work to judge and he rotates the winners (so no one gets upset!). The great thing about this fun task is that everyone can get involved. Everyone takes ownership of their bed and it also fuels the kid’s creativity as they think of ways to make their bed look the best.

Beauty salon is open

If you have girls, brushing their hair can often be a daily struggle. They don’t like sitting still for so long while you try and get their knots out and parents can often be frustrated by brushing hair when there is a lot of other things that need to be done around the house. To help with this, you need to introduce a beauty salon to the household! This of course works best with girls, but boys can also join in as their hair needs attending to. I also have a son who has curly hair so brushing his hair is necessary.

I set up two chairs for the salon. You can either find an area in the house to do this or just the bathroom. I got the kids to do up a sign like a real hair salon. They were able to call the beauty salon whatever they wanted to. They also created a sign that says OPEN and CLOSED.

Each child takes a turn in having the other one as a “client”. It is very entertaining to watch! The kids love it and they look forward going to their Beauty Salon and this mum can get some time to do their school lunches or organising their uniforms for the next day!

1, 2, 3 and Grin!

Getting kids to brush their teeth every day can often seem like a chore. I have introduced Grin Kids to their daily oral routine and it has made such a difference! The kids now look forward to brushing their teeth and I no longer need to remind them or ask the kids to brush their teeth as they are now wanting to do it on their own! So what is 1, 2, 3 and Grin!

Step 1: Do the floss

I never imagined introducing flossing to the kids at such a young age but Grin has developed eco-friendly kid flossers that is perfect for their little hands and easy for them to floss their teeth properly. I also love the cute packaging it comes in and portable to take with you if you go away on holidays or they are staying at their grandparent’s house for the weekend.

Step 2: Brush it naturally

The kids love their Grin toothbrushes as they are easy to hold and small enough to get around to all their little teeth. I love that it is biodegradable and better on the environment. The Grin Kids  natural toothpaste is also appealing to the kids as they come in 3 flavours that they love – strawberry, orange and berrylicious. The toothpaste is 100% natural but also contains the recommended level of flouride for their teeth. In the past I have been reluctant to use natural toothpastes as many do not contain flouride which I have been told by our dentist is important for their teeth, so I am so impressed that the Grin Kids natural toothpastes are ticking all the boxes.

Step 3: Take up the brushing challenge

Grin have a My Brushing Chart where they can track how often they brush their teeth – day and night. The chart is reusable, and the kids can use the stickers supplied to ensure they are brushing their teeth regularly. I have stuck up the chart in the bathroom so they can brush their teeth and immediately track their progress. Having the chart up in the bathroom is also a great reminder for them to brush and floss their teeth.
