Maku by Meyne Wyatt

The book Maku is part of an early chapter book series Our Stories. The Our Stories series celebrates Australia’s multicultural society with authors and illustrators from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Maku is a story of a little boy who has had to constantly move schools throughout his life and finding that he has had to try and resettle himself into a school environment each time. Faced being the new kid in school, kids whisper ‘He doesn’t live with his mum or dad.’ Maku lives with his nan and pop.

The story is wonderfully written for children who are shy, unsettled and trying to fit in. Maku through the book finds the courage to share his passion for movies with his classmates and ultimately makes friends.

This is a great book for early readers as the font is big and the storyline is easy to follow.

A great book that many kids can relate to and has them walking away feeling better after reading it.
