Moving house in the summer

Summer is arguably the best time to move house as the kids are out of school and it’s sometimes the best time to take off work – but this also means that a lot of people will be moving around the same time. It’s important to be prepared during this time as moving can be really stressful, let alone with the summer heat to add to the mix.

Having moved this time last year, here are my top tips for moving house in summer.

1. Book your movers in early

Everything is in higher demand over summer so it is essential you plan your moving team as early as possible. Book anything you may need in advance as it could be hard to get help during the busy periods. Companies like Hire A Mover can help get your things where they need to go while providing great service to make sure things go smoothly.

2. Be careful when packing and moving perishables

Australia’s climate can definitely be a problem when moving in summer. There is no doubt it will be ridiculously hot and humid, so it’s good to prepare for the day by getting an early start and making sure you have a plan. Anything that could be damaged by heat should be prioritised to be last in and first out. Things like food, makeup, medication or candles need to be stored within certain temperatures.

3. Prep for the day

Prepping for a big move is the key to things going smoothly (which they never do!). Making sure you organise what you are going to need the first few days vs things that can be unpacked later is an important distinction to stop you having to open all of your boxes to find your toothbrush. Deciding which pieces of furniture need to be built first, or which rooms to unpack, should be done before the day to make it less stressful. Getting everything done quick and easy is important when you’re racing against the rising midday heat. Scheduling things for the morning and late afternoon is a good plan to stay safe during the move.

4. Cool the house before you move in

It might be a good idea to crank up the air-con before you start moving in to your new place. It is going to be a very physical day so you’ll probably be super thankful that you did this prior when you arrive with your mountains of belongings on the day.

5. Stay hydrated

This is the most important tip! Stay hydrated throughout the day and take regular breaks while you’re moving. Make sure you stop and rest and don’t overdo it with your body. There is going to be a lot of unpacking throughout the first few days and you need to take care of yourself during this time. Keep a lot of snacks handy during the move and stay on top of sunscreen and water. Guaranteed it will be a long day.
