Star the Elephant

Star the Elephant by Remy Lai

What a fabulous book on raising animal conservation issues for our children. Remy Lai is an author based in Brisbane and really brings the issues that plague our animals around the world to light in a graphic novel that makes it easy for children to understand.

Hi! I’m Star and I’m an elephant. There isn’t enough food left on my island, so my herd has to split up. But the world out there is so big! Soon I am lost and alone, facing giant spiders and a big, wild ocean and the scariest thing of all … humans! Will I ever see my family again?

My 7-year-old was very moved by Star the Elephant’s plight facing deforestation, being separated from his mum and being scared of humans.

It created some great conversations between my daughter and me as she couldn’t understand why these elephants’ homes were being destroyed.

The comic-like graphic makes it easy for kids to bring the story to life and I loved how my 7-year-old eagerly wanted to find out what happens to Star and see if Star will be ok by the end of the story.

Such an important topic for our next generation and such a fabulous way to bring that discussion to life through this book.
