Smarty Pup #1: Friends Fur-ever by Anh Do

A new series of books from the bestselling children’s author – Anh Do. My 8 year old girl is a fan of Anh Do books and has read quite a few of his different series.

Smarty Pup is a full colour adventure book about Lily’s new pup called JJ. Lily’s dad excitedly tells his daughter that they are getting a dog and off they go to the animal shelter to choose one – and this is where they find JJ. As they take him home for the first night, the next morning Lily goes to look for JJ, and to her surprise, JJ starts talking to her! The adventure is of Lily taking JJ to school and what happens there is for the kids to read about.

While the recommended age for this book is 6-10 years old, my 8 year old found this a bit too young for her. I would say this book would be more for 5-7 year olds. I know that a 5 year old wouldn’t be able to read this book but it would be an easy book to read to a 5 year old and to start introducing them to chapter books versus picture books. Because this is full of pictures, the younger kids would be more engaged.

It’s a nice and easy book to follow and the pictures do bring the story to life. I will be reading this to my 5 year old boy as I think he would be more engaged to this book rather than my 8 year old. The book also comes with stickers at the back of my back which my 5 year old was more interested in than my 8 year old.
